Monkey Market

Being one of the largest coconut-producing areas, people in West Sumatra use the monkeys to pick the coconuts from the trees. Monkeys are sold every Wednesday in Sungai Sarik, where is a place one of the animal markets in West Sumatra. The seller said, that the price of monkeys is 350.000 IDR for female monkeys and 150.000 IDR for male monkeys.

Those selling monkeys are brought from the northern part of West Sumatra. Overthere, Monkeys are considered as a pest for palm oil plantations. They are hunted and caught, then taken to Padang Pariaman for sale. Some of them are dead caused by stuffy and dehydration along with their travel to the market.
